on iPhone, privately.

Some audio editors, hardware samplers and upload forms only accept WAV. Filemorph decodes an M4A to uncompressed WAV on your iPhone, so the file is ready for them without an upload.

Filemorph converting M4A to WAV on iPhone

M4A is the compressed AAC format that Apple Music, Voice Memos and most iPhone recording apps write by default. It plays almost everywhere, but a number of tools still expect uncompressed PCM audio: desktop editors that work sample by sample, hardware samplers, older playback devices, and upload forms that list WAV as the only accepted format.

Filemorph decodes the M4A with Apple's AVFoundation and writes the result as a 16-bit WAV at the same sample rate and channel count as the source. Decoding does not bring back detail the AAC encoder discarded, so the WAV sounds the same as the M4A, only in a container every audio tool can read. Expect a much larger file: uncompressed stereo at 44.1 kHz takes roughly ten megabytes per minute.

How to convert M4A to WAV on iPhone

Pro
  1. Add your M4A file. Open Filemorph and pick the M4A from Files or the Share sheet.
  2. Choose WAV. Tap Transcode and set Output Format to WAV. The same picker offers M4A, MP3 and AIFF.
  3. Save or share. Tap Convert. The WAV saves locally, ready to open in an editor or hand to a tool that needs PCM audio.

In the app: Transcode (Output Format: WAV).

Why convert M4A to WAV?

Compatibility, not quality. WAV is the common denominator for audio software and hardware: every editor, DAW, sampler and transcription service reads it, while AAC support varies from tool to tool. Converting to WAV removes the format question so you can get on with the edit or the upload.

Is it private?

Yes. Unlike web converters that upload your files to a server, Filemorph converts every file locally using Apple's frameworks. Nothing leaves your device, and it works with no internet connection. This operation is part of Filemorph Pro ($29.99/year, 7-day free trial on monthly and annual plans).

FAQ

M4A → WAV — common questions.

Does converting M4A to WAV improve the sound? +

No. The M4A was compressed when it was recorded or encoded, and decoding to WAV reproduces that audio exactly as it is. You get a lossless copy of a lossy file, which is what an editor needs, but nothing that was lost comes back.

How big will the WAV be? +

Roughly ten times the size of the M4A for typical music, and more for a low-bitrate voice recording. A three-minute stereo track at 44.1 kHz comes out at about 30 MB as a 16-bit WAV.

Is M4A to WAV conversion free? +

No, audio Transcode is part of Filemorph Pro ($29.99 a year, 7-day free trial on monthly and annual plans).
