Every bank statement contains your account number, balance and every purchase. Before you pick a converter, know where that PDF goes. Here is how the two approaches differ — and where Filemorph fits (and where it does not).
A PDF bank statement is a picture of a table, not data. Every PDF-to-OFX tool — online or on-device — runs the same three-stage pipeline: recognize the transaction table on the page, turn each row into a typed transaction (a date, a description, a signed amount), then write those transactions out as an OFX file your finance software can import. The differences between tools are in where that pipeline runs and how well it handles a messy statement, not in what the pipeline is doing.
PDFs make that harder than it looks. Bank statements repeat their header row on every page, which a naive parser reads as extra transactions. Many banks write a negative amount in parentheses instead of with a minus sign. Some split debits and credits into two separate columns that a converter has to merge into one signed amount, and get the sign backwards for a credit-card statement, where a charge and a payment run in opposite directions from a checking account. A converter that handles these correctly on the first try, without you fixing anything by hand, is doing the actual hard part of the job.
However the parsing works, your statement has to be processed somewhere, and there are three places that can happen.
| Approach | Files leave your device? | Works offline | Output formats | Pricing model | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upload-based web converters | Yes — to the provider's server, per their own retention policy | No, a connection is required to upload and download | OFX, and often CSV, QBO or Excel variants — varies by provider | Varies — subscription or credit-based, per the provider's own pricing page | A one-off statement, when uploading it doesn't concern you |
| Desktop converters | No — processed locally by the installed program | Yes, once installed | OFX, and often CSV or QBO variants — varies by product | Varies — typically a license, sometimes with a transaction-limited trial | Recurring desktop bookkeeping on a Windows PC or Mac |
| Filemorph | No — iPhone, iPad or Mac, nothing uploaded | Yes | OFX 1.02 only | Pro, $29.99/year, with a 7-day free trial | People whose finance app imports OFX and who would rather their statement never touched a server |
An honest comparison includes the cases where the other column wins. Filemorph is not the right tool if:
Whichever tool you use, ask the same four questions before you hand over a bank statement:
The tie-breaker is the Airplane Mode test: turn on Airplane Mode and try the conversion. If it still works, nothing left your device. If it doesn't, something needed a network — which means your statement did too. Filemorph passes that test, because there's no server in its conversion path to reach. See exactly what the app can and can't send over a network on the transparency page.
The on-device path is three steps: open the statement PDF in Filemorph, choose the To OFX operation and confirm the detected columns in the review sheet, then export the .ofx file to Files or AirDrop it to your Mac and import it into GnuCash, YNAB or Xero. The PDF to OFX conversion page covers the operation itself; the full step-by-step guide walks through getting the PDF onto your iPhone, reading the review sheet, and importing into each of the three apps, plus fixes for statements that don't parse cleanly on the first try.
Some web tools offer a limited free tier in exchange for uploading the statement. Filemorph's PDF to OFX export is part of Pro, with a 7-day free trial. PDF to Text is free on every tier.
It depends on the provider's retention and processing terms — read them before you upload anything. The safest statement is the one that never left your device.
Check your finance software's import menu. GnuCash, YNAB and Xero all accept OFX directly. QFX is a licensed variant of the format that Filemorph does not write.
Yes, using on-device optical recognition — legibility matters more than file type. A flat, well-lit scan reads as reliably as a native PDF; a blurry photo may need a column corrected in the review step.
Filemorph Pro converts PDF statements to OFX on-device. 7-day trial included. Plus 300+ more file operations.
